Best Kolo Mee In Town (So Said The Kuching Girl) **Stall is now closed unfortunately - Updated Aug 2018**

Every now and then, I crave for a good bowl of authentic Kolo Mee. What is Kolo Mee? Well, it's similar to Wanton Mee, has almost the same "liao" / ingredients, but the taste? It's something so special, you can't quite replicate it out of Kuching (a small town in Sarawak, where the dish originates from). Well, I believe that I have found THE best Kolo Mee stall in our Little Red Dot. So good that it's worth an amazing race of a bus ride from CBD during a very short lunch hour. To sum it all up - it was well worth it.

Nothing too extravagant, just simple plain unadulterated good bowl of noodle.
"Less is more" they say :)

I believe the ONE thing that sets this dish apart from other Malaysian noodle dish, is, the noodles. The noodles are not made with any alkaline water (hence the pale color instead of the usual yellowish tinge) and you can taste the springy texture with each bite. I'm not sure if there is anyone in town who makes these noodles, but I've heard that a certain shop flies their noodles in all the way from Kuching, Sarawak.

Here at Kuching Food Point @ Golden Mile Food Centre, their version of this quintessential Kuching dish comes in 3 versions - Red (noodles tossed in char siew oil, hence the tinge of red from the char siew), Black (noodles tossed in soya sauce) and White (noodles tossed in only shallots and garlic oil). I always go for the Red, the meaty fat drippings from the roasting of the char siew gives the noodles that extra "oomph", you get an explosion of flavors in your mouth - sweet, salty, meaty, all rolled into one.

This is the "Big" portion @ $4.50, since I've come all the way here, might as well stuff my face silly. But in all honesty, the portion is just right.
So what's in a bowl of Kolo Mee?
Minced pork, char siew, chye sim greens, spring onion, noodles tossed in garlic and shallot oil,
pork lard.
Perfection in a bowl :)

In some places, wantons come together in the bowl of soup that often accompanies the noodles.
Here they have a light vegetable broth with bits of cabbage and carrot.
