The Low Down on Good Eats - Amoy Food Center Series

Can't quite find any write-ups about this hawker center. But from the facade of the building, it looks to be have been built around the 80s? Nonetheless, for those working around the CBD (Shenton Way, Tanjong Pagar area) you would have been pretty much acquainted with grabbing a hurried lunch here, jostling with the office crowd and choping seats with tissue packets, namecards, EZ Link cards, etc...... Ahh, the joys of dining in the Central Business District. Despite all the shortcomings this place has, it still proves to be a popular dining choice, food is good and decently priced. Here I have listed down some personal faves which I hope you may enjoy as much I do!

Rafee's Corner #01-76
They make one of THE Best Teh Halia ever. Key point to note is, when asked for "kurang manis" or "less sweet", the tea comes with just a hint of sweetness that does not overpower the heady scent of ginger and freshly brewed tea. Although they generally have some kuehs for sale throughout the day, the best variety is found in the mornings. Come early in to find familiar favourites like Kueh Lopis, Kueh Kosui and Pulut Panggang.

Warung Parsanga #01-75
Nasi Padang fans would know this! They serve really authentic and rustic dishes with that unmistakable homecook taste. And their rendang? Sedap giler...

Zhi char goodness in abundance. From what I've observed, they seem popular with San Lao Hor Fun, Fried Sliced Fish Soup and Har Cheong Gai. Have tried the first two and they were absolutely smashing. Now, to find someone willing to gain a pound or two with the drool-worthy Har Cheong Gai....

Tong Fatt Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice #01-43
$2.50 for a plate of sinful goodness. One of the very few places left (probably on the whole of Singapore) to charge only $2.50 for a plate of chicken rice. Portion may be small (but then again, any portion is small if it's chicken rice we talking about! It is so addictive that I can just go on and on and on.. stuffing my face with it).

Jin Hai Cooked Food #01-40
This uncle makes only a handful of dishes - Fried Rice, Fried Hor Fun (wet and dry), Fried Bee Hoon. And he serves 'em up in like a flash! Love love love the fried rice, chock full of char siew and super tasty and with that aromatic smoky wok hei!

Zhi Sheng Cooked Food #02-108
They may be the most affordable mixed rice stall in the whole hawker center. Prices range from $0.50 for vegetable dishes to a mere $1.00 for fish and meat dishes. Food's simple and very homely and most importantly, very easy on the pockets. For CBD-ians, that is a huge blessing indeed :)
Oh, do be prepared to queue ya. And it gets really stuffy come lunch hour :(

Bake_Of #02-111
For those feeling peckish after lunch, or if you are hunting for a teatime snack, do drop by Bake_Of. They serve freshly baked muffins of assorted flavours, homemade cakes and also some breakfast dishes that varies from time to time. Their muffins are light, fluffy and super delish!

Dessert Ah Balling #02-113
*Do note that this stall now share the space with a stall serving soup and rice dishes*
The only stall that does traditional desserts, and boy do they make it good. Personal faves are Chng Thng ($2.20) and Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts ($2.80).

My favourite fish soup stall. "Personal best" time queuing for a heavenly bowl of piping hot seafood goodness? 45 minutes. It was a gruelling wait needless to say. But it was oh-so-worth-it. Every single drop of soup I would polish off the whole bowl. Just because it is THAT good, and also because I queued so darn long, hah (every single time, without a fail). It doesn't come cheap though, be prepared to shell out (pun intended!) minimum of $7.00 for a bowl of fish soup (small), the one with 'em succulent prawns will set you back $10.00 a bowl (small). And oh, their special chilli-with-an-oomph costs $0.50 if you would like an extra portion. Told ya... be prepared to pay!

Helmed by 2 siblings with graduate degrees, Coffee Break has amassed a faithful following with their unique takes on the humble coffee, tea and (not-so) traditional toasts. Apart from the usual fare of Kaya and Butter toast combination, they also offer Black Sesame + Butter, Yam Paste + Butter and Cinnamon Sugar.

That's all for now, will update the post periodically when a new favorite pops up!
Stay tuned for more ya!
