Mad About Sucre - Reddy On Sucre High

Pastries have always been Reddy's Achilles Heel. Being in a pastry shop is akin to a child being in a candy store - eyes are all wide with curious bewilderment, the mind soaks in the multi sensory treat, and the taste buds tingles with excitement on the thought of devouring each and every piece of those painstakingly handcrafted works of art. Enter Mad About Sucre, one of the newest pattiserie in town with pastry chef Lena Chan at it's helm, armed with a prestigious Le Cordon Bleu qualification, and her brother fashionable brother Eric who is in charge of marketing and daily operations. Their small cakes menu change seasonally, the menu is not extensive, you get only a few flavours for each season, but there will be a few signature ones which are usually on the menu on a daily basis - the chocolate dome dessert of "Black San Domingue" and their Hummingbird cake. The service is impeccable - not the stuffy fine dining kind of impeccable, but more that with feel-good warmth and genuine enthusiasm.

If you are feeling like taking a nice stroll (albeit the haze) from the CBD towards hip area of Keong Saik, you will be in for a stroll down memory lane, very literally. Just at the junction of Neil Road and Tanjong Pagar Road is Jinkirisha Station, which once served as a central depot for for rickshaws. It was built in 1903 by Municipal Engineer Samuel Tomlinson and Municipal Architect DM Craik. And just a few years ago in 2007, Jinkirisha Station was bought by megastar Jackie Chan for a tidy sum of $11m.

Love these charming old buildings, so full of character they are

New Majestic Hotel once housed wealthy men's mistresses in it's heydays

Almost there

Yes! Here!

There is a savory menu of light bites. Perfect to make space for desserts!

French Onion Soup @ $8.80 came with a small piece of cheese pastry. That is definitely healthier than the traditional version that comes with whole lot of cheese on top.

Oh, this I loved! The grapes, apricot and walnut salad was refreshing and complemented the rich tarte very well

Tarte of Homemade Sundried Tomato & French Mustard, Marmande Style @ $16.90

What I look for in a good pastry crust, is the aromatic taste of butter when the crust subtly melts in the mouth with the slightest of effort

Their dessert menu is seasonal but you can find some popular items on a regular basis. What is comforting to know here is the staff are well versed and knowledgeable enough of their menu and they take time and effort to describe each piece you have questions about.

Luna de Miel @ $10.80. Pretty dainty piece of artwork, made of French Spring Honey Mousse, Blood Orange, Grapefruit, Savore Sponge and Short Pastry. I was even given pointers on how to best enjoy this dessert - take a bit of everything into one mouthful. After gorging myself with a starter and a "main course", Luna de Miel is as light and airy as I was promised, nothing too heavy, nor too sweet; perfect.

The San Domingue is a regular feature on the menu

Seasonal flavours

Can't recall what was it that I had, but the tea tasted like soap and was quite unpleasant to say the least. But, I have to put out a special mention of James (if my terrible memory don't fail me), who was sincerely apologetic for recommending me what tasted like soap to me, haha. He instead offered to change my pot of tea to something a little bit easier on the palate. And he did not charge me for the change. Extra mile moment!
